The International Student Mentorship Program (ISMP) is a dedicated program specifically designed to connect committed student mentors with incoming international students to improve their academic achievement, social competence on campus, and to facilitate smooth adjustment into the SUNY College at Buffalo community. By sharing experiences and insights, mentors can ease the transition process of new international student experience. This program is jointly sponsored by the Office of International Student Affairs, the Residence Life and Housing Office, and the Higher Education Administration department at SUNY College at Buffalo.
The ISMP pairs current Buffalo State students, with new incoming international students. International students new to Buffalo State, who are interested in the ISMP can apply to be assigned to an International Student Mentor. International Student Mentors will provide frequent, informal guidance to new student mentees 1-on-1 or in small groups of 3-5 people.
International Student Mentors and new student mentees are expected to mutually agree on meeting times and venues. During these weekly meetings, students can pose questions and gain insight from their mentor and fellow mentees as well as discuss relevant topics as they pertain to student success, student engagement, shared experiences, and any other topics of interest.
Any current Buffalo State student who is interested in helping others and is willing to share his or her time, effort, and energy to help others succeed here at Buffalo State, is welcome to become an International Student Mentor. If you are an undergraduate in your sophomore, junior, senior year or a graduate student, you may apply to become an International Student Mentor.
If you are a graduate student in the Higher Education Administration program, you may be eligible to apply and obtain up to three credit hours for being a mentor or program coordinator.
